Apartment Magaluf
If you thought Mallorca was all sand, sangria and sunburn, then think again. It might be one of the top package tour destinations in the Mediterranean, but although beach resorts such as Magaluf still cater for the crowds, much of this Spanish island is altogether classier. There are chic retreats, quiet mountain villages and almond groves. Not to mention the historic city of Palma, where successive occupants from the Romans to the Byzantines and Muslims have left their mark.
Hotel Bon Sol
There are some charming family-run hotels too, such as the Hotel Bon Sol in Illetes (Pasco de Illetas, 30; T. (34) 971 4021 11; half board from €94-€133 per person per day), just 5 miles outside Palma. Owned and run by the charming Xamena family for the past 60 years, it is set into a hillside overlooking the sea. With its spacious rooms, free Wi-Fi, three swimming pools, two restaurants, large breakfast room and terraced bar, it offers good facilities for those seeking a relaxed break in the sun.
